Alligators Florida
Alligators are an animal native to Florida, and these deadly reptiles make their homes in many of the States marshes and swamps. Not only are they a fascinating and terrifying animal, they are also an integral part of Florida's wetland ecosystem. Alligator hunting was a popular Florida sport from the mid 1800's to 1970. As the hunting increased however, the number of Alligators dropped dramatically, placing them on the endangered species list in 1967. As the control over the well-being of this animal was heightened, their numbers rose once again, and since 1977 they have been considered 'threatened' instead of endangered. Crocodiles also make their home in Florida, and these animals are still considered endangered.

The best places to see gators in their natural habitats is to visit the Everglades of Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. While alligators do make their homes here, it is not guaranteed that you will indeed see one in these locations. For a more up-close-and-personal look at these amazing animals, spend a day at Gatorland, where many gators make their homes.

Located between Orlando and Kissimmee on the South Orange Blossom Trail, Gatorland (www.gatorland.com) provides a nice alternative to some of the more crazy theme parks in the Orlando area. But don't let this fool you into thinking it lacks excitement: these animals are anything but boring! This 110-acre park and wildlife reserve has been running for over half a century, and contains a breeding marsh with boardwalks and an observation tower, daily shows, thousands of alligators and crocodiles, a miniature water park, and even a petting zoo!

One of the best parts of the park are its many shows. The Gator Jumparoo features gators leaping out of the water to snatch food from a trainers hand, Jungle Crocs of the World displays the crocs with the hugest teeth you've ever seen, and Gator Wrestlin' combines the excitement of wrestling real gators with an environmental awareness program.

Those with a brave sense of appetite will want to sample the gator ribs or gator nuggets from one of the parks restaurant, and be sure to check out the souvenir shop for gator-skin products.
